AstraZeneca Opens Strategic R&D Center in Massachusetts

This site joins another one nearby in Cambridge, and adds to AstraZeneca’s research capabilities in Gaithersburg, Md.

Editor’s Take: The R&D center provides a new home for emerging technologies like robotics, continuous automation, and agentic AI.

AstraZeneca on Oct. 5 opened a new, global strategic R&D center in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Mass. The state-of-the-art facility builds on the company’s existing presence in the Boston–Cambridge area, a major life sciences ecosystem.

The Binney Street site—near a genomic medicine hub on the same street—stretches 18 stories, covering 570,000 square feet. Now employed there, close to 2000 scientists and researchers accelerating AstraZeneca’s oncology, cell therapy, chronic disease, and rare disease pipelines.

R&D Technologies and Innovations

Inside, the R&D center features cutting-edge technologies including robotics, continuous automation, and agentic AI.

Specific diseases AstraZeneca is focusing on in the near term include COPD, obesity and metabolic disease, and breast cancer.

AstraZeneca has another United States-based global strategic research center in Gaithersburg, Md. The Kendall Square site now joins the company’s 24 U.S. R&D, manufacturing, commercial, and corporate locations.

Overall, this adds up to a workforce of more than 25,000, supporting nearly 100,000 total U.S. jobs.

“Kendall Square is a leading innovation ecosystem,” AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot said. “It is one of the key locations where AstraZeneca will discover the next generation of scientific breakthroughs. Our new R&D center not only reflects AstraZeneca’s long-term commitment to Massachusetts but also our belief in delivering U.S.-led innovation.”

AstraZeneca Growing US Footprint

To that end, AstraZeneca in July 2025 announced a $50 billion investment in the U.S. by 2030. Of that, more than $1 billion is earmarked for Massachusetts, where the company has a 75-plus year history.

Taking into account the new R&D Center Kendall Square, AstraZeneca plans to expand its Massachusetts workforce by more than 50%.

Moving forward, the company says it wants to create community value through academic research partnerships, STEM investments, and workforce development.
